Custom Instrument Build
A unique voice, a form that fits your hand perfectly. At Ketiminetrail, we specialize in crafting bespoke instruments that embody the soul of the performer. By blending uncompromising material selection with traditional luthier techniques, we create a lifelong partner for your musical expression.
An instrument is more than just a tool; it is an extension of the musician's body and a vehicle for their emotional expression. The key to unlocking a true performance lies in a design that is perfectly adapted to the player's hand size, playing style, and specific tonal requirements—details that mass-produced instruments simply cannot provide. We translate the abstract image of your "ideal sound" into a physical reality through precise structural engineering and the careful selection of acoustic materials.
Located in the heart of Chuo-ku, Fukuoka, our workshop operates under strict climate control, maintaining a humidity level of 45-55% to ensure the long-term stability of the wood. We take a slow, deliberate approach to construction, repeating millimeter-scale adjustments at every stage to achieve a perfect harmony between structural integrity and artistic resonance.
The Crafting Process
We conduct an in-depth interview regarding your ideal tone, performance challenges, and aesthetic preferences. We measure the player's hand size to design the optimal neck profile and body balance.
Based on the design, we select premium tonewoods with superior acoustic properties. We analyze grain density and moisture content to ensure stability and rich overtones.
Our master luthiers carve and assemble the instrument by hand. We repeatedly fine-tune the internal structure until the target resonance characteristics are achieved.
After the curing period for the finish, we perform the final setup. String height, action, and intonation are optimized to the extreme for peak performance.
Who Is This Service For?
Our custom builds are ideal for professional musicians seeking a specific sonic signature, as well as dedicated amateurs who wish to explore unique tonal territories. We also cater to players who experience physical discomfort with standard instruments due to anatomical differences, providing ergonomic solutions that facilitate effortless playing. Additionally, we welcome collectors who view a handcrafted instrument as both a piece of art and a generational asset.
Our Approach to Luthierie
Our philosophy is rooted in "dialogue." We do not simply take an order; we dive deep into the music you wish to create and the emotions you want to convey. For instance, whether you prioritize a rich, warm low-end or a piercing, clear high-end determines everything from the thickness of the soundboard to the internal bracing pattern. Every structural choice is a sonic choice.
What to Prepare
To facilitate the design process, we encourage you to provide a written list of requirements or audio recordings of tones that inspire you. If you currently use an instrument, specific feedback on what you love and what you find frustrating is invaluable. This allows us to establish a baseline for improvement and ensures the new instrument solves existing problems while enhancing your strengths.
What You Receive
Upon delivery, you receive the completed instrument along with a detailed specification document recording the entire build process. This includes certificates of origin and characteristics for the selected tonewoods. We also provide a personalized maintenance schedule and a guide on daily care tailored specifically to the unique properties of your new instrument.
Timeline and Delivery
Because we work with natural organic materials, custom instrument building is fundamentally different from industrial manufacturing. The process requires patience, including time for the wood to settle and the finish to cure. Depending on the complexity, the timeline can range from several months to over a year. A detailed project schedule will be presented during the first meeting after the design is finalized.
Exclusions and Restrictions
Ketiminetrail strictly adheres to international environmental regulations. In accordance with CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), we refuse any requests to use rare materials without proper documentation, including Brazilian Rosewood, ivory, or tortoiseshell. Furthermore, we do not provide complex electronic modifications or the installation of specialized electrical equipment requiring external power sources, as these fall outside our luthier expertise.
Pricing and Consumption Tax
The total cost of a custom build is calculated as the sum of "Basic Design Fee + Material Costs + Labor Hours." The final price varies based on the grade of the wood selected, the complexity of the ornamentation, and any specialized technical specifications. All quotes clearly state the price excluding tax and the mandatory Japanese Consumption Tax (消費税) of 10%.
