Guitar Setup & Adjustment

Unlock the full sonic and ergonomic potential of your instrument. From precise action optimization to neck relief calibration, we provide meticulous setups tailored to your unique playing style and technical requirements.

Guitars are constructed from organic tonewoods that react constantly to their environment. In a city like Fukuoka, where humidity fluctuates significantly between the rainy season and winter, the neck can bow or the saddle can wear down over time. This often leads to high action that fatigues the fingers or, conversely, action that is too low, causing unwanted fret buzz and loss of sustain.

At Ketiminetrail, we move beyond generic adjustments. We begin by understanding the genre you play and your specific touch. Whether you require a lightning-fast setup for technical lead work or a stable, balanced feel for rhythmic accompaniment, we apply millimeter-precise calibrations to ensure your instrument supports your creativity rather than hindering it.

The 4-Step Setup Process

01
Diagnostic Analysis
We perform a comprehensive measurement of neck relief, fret leveling, and the condition of the nut and saddle to identify specific issues.
02
Structural Calibration
We adjust the truss rod to correct the neck bow, followed by precision saddle sanding to achieve your ideal string height.
03
Detail Optimization
Nut slots are refined for depth and width, improving open-string playability and overall tuning stability.
04
Final Validation
We verify every fret for buzz and check the balance between playability and tone before the instrument is ready for return.

Who Is This Service For?

Professional setup is essential if you notice specific performance hurdles. If you find that the action becomes excessively high in the upper frets, making chord transitions or solos strenuous, your neck may have shifted. Similarly, if you encounter "dead notes" or unpleasant buzzing on specific frets, this is often a sign of uneven fret wear or improper neck relief.

We also assist players who struggle with frequent tuning instability or a "stiff" feel after changing strings. Whether you are a beginner looking for an instrument that is easier to learn on, or a professional preparing for a recording session or concert in Fukuoka, resetting your instrument to its peak condition allows you to focus entirely on your music.

Our Technical Approach

Our workshop operates on a philosophy of minimal intervention for maximum result. We start with a detailed consultation: "I want a light touch" or "I prioritize maximum sustain." Depending on these goals, the direction of the adjustment changes. We use professional straight-edges and precision gauges to ensure our diagnoses are based on objective data rather than intuition alone.

When adjusting the truss rod or saddle, we avoid aggressive force to minimize stress on the wood. For vintage instruments or those made from rare tonewoods, we apply a more delicate handling process, acknowledging that older woods react differently to tension and environmental changes.

How to Prepare Your Instrument

To ensure the most accurate setup, please inform us of the string gauge (thickness) you currently use or plan to use. Since string tension directly affects neck bow and action, knowing your preferred gauge is critical. If you have specific "problem areas"—such as a buzz on the 7th fret—please provide a note so we can pay extra attention to those points.

Please bring your guitar in a hard case or a high-quality gig bag. Ensure that the internal padding is sufficient to protect the instrument from impacts during transport. If you wish to have new strings installed as part of the service, you may specify your preferred brand and model in advance.

What You Receive Upon Completion

Along with your optimized instrument, you will receive a detailed "Work Report." This document lists the measurements before and after the adjustment, as well as the specific actions taken. This transparency allows you to understand exactly how your instrument has changed and the technical basis for those changes.

Additionally, we provide a recommended maintenance schedule and advice on humidity control specifically for the Fukuoka climate. If requested, we can provide a brief demonstration on how to maintain the setup through daily care and proper storage.

Turnaround Time and Deadlines

The average turnaround for a guitar setup is 7 to 14 days. This timeframe is not merely for the labor itself, but includes a necessary "stabilization period." After adjusting the tension and installing new strings, we allow the wood to settle into its new state to ensure the setup remains consistent over time.

While we can discuss urgent requests, we strongly advise against rushing the stabilization process to guarantee quality. A final delivery date will be provided after the initial diagnostic analysis, based on the current state of your instrument.

What Is Not Included

The standard setup plans do not include major structural repairs, such as neck resets, full fret replacement due to deep wear, or extensive body crack repairs. These specialized tasks are handled under our separate "Fret Replacement & Leveling" service.

Furthermore, complete electrical overhauls, pickup modifications, or external amplifier repairs are outside the scope of this service. If a critical electronic failure is discovered during the diagnostic phase, we will provide a separate estimate and proceed only after your explicit consent.

Pricing and Consumption Tax

We utilize a fixed-price system based on the level of maintenance required. All displayed prices include the 10% Japanese Consumption Tax (消費税). For corporate clients or those requiring tax-exclusive figures for accounting, we provide the 税抜 price in our pricing table.

The initial diagnostic fee is 0 JPY. If we determine that a setup is not required or if you choose not to proceed based on the estimate, no charges will be applied. The final cost is always determined by the written estimate provided before any work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I get my guitar set up?
Generally, we recommend a setup every six months or during seasonal transitions (especially before the rainy season and the dry winter). However, this depends on your playing frequency and storage environment. If you notice a change in action, it is time for a visit.
Isn't just changing the strings enough?
String replacement is the replenishment of a consumable. A setup is the calibration of the instrument's "skeleton." If the guitar remains difficult to play after new strings, the cause lies in the neck or saddle. A professional setup ensures you get the full performance out of those new strings.
Can I specify a exact string height?
Yes. You can provide specific measurements (e.g., 2.0mm at the 12th fret) or describe your preference in general terms, such as "as low as possible without buzzing." We will use our experience to find the optimal balance for your instrument.
