Wind Instrument Cleaning and Precision Maintenance

Wind instruments possess a highly delicate internal architecture where the accumulation of moisture, organic debris, and oxidized metal films directly impairs both the tonal purity and the mechanical response. At Ketiminetrail, our specialized technicians perform meticulous disassembly of each instrument, employing material-specific cleaning agents and refined techniques to restore the original brilliance and resonance of your instrument.

The inevitable buildup from daily performance and the hardening of pads over time lead to a loss of airtightness, which manifests as difficulty in producing low notes and unstable pitch. Our approach goes beyond simple cleaning; we calibrate the mechanism to millimeter precision, ensuring that the musician can focus entirely on their performance without mechanical resistance.

The Critical Importance of Wind Instrument Care

For both woodwind and brass instruments, internal hygiene and airtightness are the foundation of sound quality. When corrosion progresses due to saliva and condensation, it can lead to microscopic pinholes in the tube or sluggish key action. Regular professional cleaning not only extends the lifespan of the instrument but also protects the respiratory and oral health of the performer.

In urban environments like Fukuoka City, drastic seasonal humidity shifts increase the risk of cracks in wooden bodies and accelerated oxidation of metal components. Our workshop operates in a climate-controlled environment maintained at 45-55% humidity, allowing us to remove contaminants and restore functionality while minimizing stress on the materials.

Our Four-Step Maintenance Process

01

Detailed Diagnostics

We conduct a comprehensive check of the instrument, evaluating pad deterioration, screw tension, body alignment, and internal debris to determine the optimal maintenance plan.

02

Disassembly & Cleaning

The key system is carefully disassembled. We use specialized cleaning solutions tailored to the specific metal or wood to remove all oxidation and internal buildup.

03

Component Replacement

We replace worn pads and adjust the height and seal of each key. Friction in the mechanism is reduced to ensure a fluid, effortless finger action.

04

Final Inspection

The instrument is played across its entire range to verify airtightness and pitch. We ensure the blowing resistance meets the musician's preference before delivery.

Who Should Utilize This Service

Our maintenance services are specifically designed for musicians facing the following challenges. First, those who find it increasingly difficult to produce low-register notes or feel that air is leaking during specific fingerings. In most cases, this is caused by the degradation of pads or the accumulation of residue affecting the seal.

Additionally, we recommend this service for players who have used their instrument for several years without a deep clean, those concerned about internal hygiene, or those whose instrument has lost its visual luster, which can impact stage presence. We welcome everyone from conservatory students and professional orchestral musicians to amateurs returning to their instrument after a long hiatus.

Our Technical Approach to Restoration

Our work is not merely about surface polishing. We prioritize the "airtightness" of the instrument, which is the heart of wind performance. When replacing pads, we are uncompromising in our selection of materials and the precision of the seating adjustment to ensure a perfect seal.

During the cleaning phase, we avoid overly aggressive chemicals that could damage the metal. Instead, we use a combination of neutral to mildly alkaline specialized agents, pairing chemical cleaning with physical brushing. This restores a smooth airflow throughout the entire bore of the instrument.

What to Prepare for Your Appointment

To ensure a smooth intake process, please bring the instrument along with its case and all accessories, including mouthpieces, reeds, and ligatures. Examining the condition of the accessories often helps us identify the root cause of overall instrument malfunctions.

Furthermore, we encourage you to provide a brief note detailing specific issues, such as "the note leaks when using this fingering" or "the pitch in this register feels off." This allows us to perform a more precise calibration tailored to your specific playing style and requirements.

What You Receive Upon Delivery

Once the maintenance is complete, you will receive a detailed "Maintenance Report" documenting every action taken. This includes a list of replaced parts and specific adjustments made, providing you with a clear record of your instrument's current state.

We also provide "Custom Care Advice" to help you maintain the results. This includes daily cleaning tips and storage precautions tailored to your instrument's specific materials. Upon request, we can provide photographic documentation comparing the internal state of the instrument before and after the process.

Turnaround Times and Scheduling

The average turnaround for wind instrument cleaning and adjustment is between 7 to 14 days. This timeframe is necessary to allow for proper drying after cleaning and a curing period to ensure that new pads have stabilized and sealed correctly.

For full maintenance involving complete disassembly or cases where specific parts must be ordered, additional time may be required. If you have an urgent performance deadline, please consult us in advance. While we strive to accommodate, we will not bypass the minimum time required to maintain our quality standards.

Exclusions and Limitations

Our primary goal is the restoration of functionality. Therefore, certain tasks are not included in the standard cleaning service. Major structural repairs, such as correcting deep dents or performing welding and hammering on the body, require a separate estimate.

Additionally, in compliance with CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), we cannot perform modifications or material replacements on instruments containing protected species (such as ivory or Brazilian rosewood) without the appropriate legal documentation. Please also note that we do not repair the electronic circuitry of digital wind instruments.

Pricing Structure and Consumption Tax

Our pricing is based on a "fixed fee per service" model. While basic cleaning is a flat rate, the replacement of pads or other components will incur additional charges based on the quantity and material of the parts used.

All prices displayed include the 10% Consumption Tax (消費税) as required by Japanese law. We provide a clear quote showing both the tax-exclusive and tax-inclusive prices before any work begins. If any additional costs arise during the process, we will contact you for approval before proceeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a fee for the initial diagnostic?

No, the initial diagnostic of your instrument is free of charge. We assess the condition and provide a detailed quote. Work only commences once you have reviewed and approved the proposed plan.

How often should I have my instrument professionally cleaned?

Depending on usage, we generally recommend a professional check-up once a year, or during seasonal transitions. Changes in humidity often necessitate re-adjustment to maintain consistent performance.

What is the way to transport my instrument to the workshop?

Please bring your instrument in its dedicated hard case. Ensure it is securely fixed within the case to avoid vibrations or impact during transit. For more details, please refer to our Guide on Safe Instrument Transport.

Is there a warranty on the maintenance work?

We provide a 6-month warranty on all adjustment work performed at our workshop. If any issues related to the adjustment appear within this period, we will re-calibrate the instrument free of charge. This does not cover damage caused by accidents or drops.
